I’ve got your microphone right here
Worked the Angela Davis lecture last night (see Devon’s review here).
Two things -
It was a crazy night. Sold out show, busy. I had a lot of reasons to ask questions of my boss, who was nutty busy and had to run around all night. At one point I went backstage looking for her. I walked past a couple of people, saw someone who knew said boss, shouted to him, “have you seen ‘boss lady’?” The woman of the group I walked past said something sort of to me, I didn’t pay attention and went back to my post. Nano seconds later, I realized Angela Davis might have been talking to me.
As people were filing in, one of the sub-organizers asked boss and me if we were going to have gender-equity in the mics (there was one microphone on each side of the stage for people to ask questions after the lecture). We both went, “Wha…?”. I wondered if it had to do w/ currents or something.
A couple of twenty-something self-righteous feminists started yabbering about how there needed to be one mic for men, one for women. “Angela Davis is a feminist, after all, and we have to ensure that women get a chance to ask questions”.
What the fuck? If you’re a feminist, then get the fuck up there and ask a question. If you’re such a wuss that you have to have segregated mics, then you deserve not to be heard. And if you think that that kind of coddling is necessary for women, you’re not a feminist.
Further proving my point, Ms. Davis was told of this request and kiboshed it.
